there's also the matchbox clip that demonstrates the same concept. This is called a Bin-aural recording where two mics are setup about as far away from each other as the human ears are. Then the sound is recorded. The input volume of one mic is always going to be higher than the other unless the origin of the sound is exactly centered so it creates an illusion that something (the sound) is in a particular direction.
Most video games use this technology. That's why multiple driver headphones (5.1 or above) are gimmicks lol.
