Rogers Cell Phone Plan
« on: July 28, 2010, 10:14:04 PM »
Hey!

I`m thinking about going on a 3 year contract with Rogers for my cell phone. I want to get the Sony Xperia X10 (which is a smartphone). Is it possible to get a smartphone without getting a smartphone plan, since I have wireless at home and theres hotspots all around?

For example, the data plan is $50. Can I just buy the Xperia X10 and go with a normal $30 plan?

Nice one genius ::)

Now... Can I just get a data plan and pay the $100 fee to cancel the data part of it and go with a basic plan right away? Or do I have to keep the data for X amount of months?

Unless youre joking around with the Navkarn dude, don't come off so rude when asking for help, other than that like Gurbir said, theyre 24 hours so I don't know where you got the office hours thing from, this isn't Pizza Depot we're talking about. As for the smartphones, they usually refuse to sell it without the data plan and cancellation costs more than $100, I know that for sure. Unless you know someone on the inside with Sales, there's usually no way around other than buying a phone from outside without a contract and then signing a contract with them without the data.

Well I know 100% that the data cancellation fee for Rogers is $100. I guess I'm either going to have to find someone that works in the sales dept. or buy the phone from outside :/...

And I tried giving Rogers a call but they were like the office is currently closed yadda yadda yadda.. Maybe I should give Technical Support a call and ask them :P

I had the same situation. You have to get the data plan but, you can cancel it within 3-6 months and it costs $100

wait, so what's the point of a smartphone w/o a data plan? You're gonna get charged up the ass everytime you try to do anything 'smart'. Unless your phone has wi-fi, data is pretty much essential.

Thank you for giving me a straight up answer, much appreciated.

Well like I said, I've got wireless internet at home so I'd just connect to that. And for whenever I go out, theres a LOT of hotspots and unsecured wireless connections I could use :)

I have an Iphone with no data
It works really well on wireless and its an 8GB so its  slow compared to the other Iphones but not so much that im unhappy with it.
It personally saves me TONS of money in long distance because i can use skype to call or whatsapp to text :D
I have wireless at home and work which is where i am most of the day and nowadays almost everyplace has a wireless connection!
If you dont want to pay for the data plan and would rather use wireless because you dont mind being restricted for usage then id say yes! go with it.
I dont know if rogers is a good way to go.Id try fido.Rogers is a company just waiting to get sued  >:(  They have stopped sending me my bill and over charging me .When i asked about my detailed billing i was told by their employee he was told to act "shocked". Shady.

Despises hearing " your PERformance was hot "

Yeah, I bet not having data saves a ton of money!
And thats the same thing with me, I've got wireless at home and a good wireless connection where I am pretty much the entire day.
I'll be sure to check out what Fido's offering and see which one I get a better deal with :)
As for you're problem with Rogers, better get that sorted out before they try to charge you extra for not paying you're bill on time :P

Thanks for the reply, it really helped! :D
