First Indian born golfer to win a PGA Tournament

Arjun Atwal

http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/news?slug=ap-india-atwalsvictory

I can't say if it is a fluke or not.  Atwal has shown flashes of great potential.  Him being a Monday qualifier certainly stamps this win as a Cinderella story.  Now that he has secured his tour card for a while, this may be his springboard.  But this could be a bigger springboard for golf in India.  It is a very slow growing sport there, but this could give it a strong push.  With Indian golfers having won on the Asian, Japanese, and European Tours, this was the last major tour to add to the list.  For this to truly have an impact, Atwal and new and upcoming 22 year old Gaganjeet Bhullar need to start playing more consistently.  With a population as large as Indias, there have to be some guys and girls with some extreme talent.

Who cares!!! i personally don't give a rats ass. We still a corrupt nation, where only money talks!!! we have so much talent in INDIA but those folks don't have money to fulfill their dreams.....INDIA is totally full of crap!!! if i talk about cricket, we have more talented players, who can play just like Sachin Tendulkar does....but they are never given a chance because of being poor or koi sifarish karne wala hai nahi =/ and if i talk about soccer.....i dont think i have anything nice to say....or even bad...cos i really have no clue if we have any good players in INDIA....i know we have leagues over there but we really can't produce players such as Beckham, kaka, Ronaldo, Messi, etc. lol

enough of this crap.....PGA sucks!!! i only watched golf cos of Tiger Woods....he's the main reason why golf is still alive. lol

India cannot produce athletes because of the mindset of the people. That is why so many Indians flourish here in sports.
I am a douche.

I agree to pretty much everything you say about India and its mindset and corruption.  But golf is way more alive than you think brother.  TW isn't the main reason, though he is the reason it got very popular very quickly.  Golf is a sport that in India, is played by those who have money.  I firmly believe those people are capable of churning out better and better players.

Mate, even though our nation is full of corruption, i still love my homeland to death....it's just that it's really hard to see talented people being treated like roaches and not getting a chance to show their talent because of money problem. I'm not saying that Arjun Atwal is a joke....i mean its not that easy to WIN a PGA tournament......all i was trying to say was that our nation doesnt believe in TALENT at all....only MONEY matters in INDIA......if you got money, you're a STAR. lol I been wanting to see our INDIAN folks represent our nation in Olympics....but nooooo...only few people show up and they are those who just shoots arrows, and boxing i guess and other unnoticed sports"......not just me but everyone else would love to see our folks represent our nation is sports, such as swimming, sprint, gymnastics, figure skating, ice hockey, basketball, etc. and as far as golf goes.....more than 90% of folks watch golf cos of Tiger Woods....however, noone really cares about Golf these days.....N' this Atwal guy will go unnoticed soon!!!

I agree on most of what you said about india bro, but i completely dis agree on the TW statement.  When he is playin well sure ratings will boost because non-golfers will watch just bc its Tiger.  Just like non hockey fans will watch Crosby vs. Ovechkin more than any other game.  It's sad, but true in all sports.  But i would just caution you when you say things like that.  This past and almost finished season has been pretty fun to watch and has had its spurts of high TV ratings.  Alotta people do care about golf.  there are over 1 million people that are members or a part of the usga.  It is one of the most popular sports in the world.  And as I said in my original post, this victory will go unnoticed unless Atwal, and other up and coming Indian golfers start making some consistent noise.

I agree with you. Money is such a big thing in India. If you have money, you're the person to be. Its so stupid, because alot of poor people are way talented. But you cant do anything about it. Atwal is a good player, so we will see what happens to him. But I disliked the portion where they talked about how much he made. Its stupid, just cuz he made that much shouldnt mean he is a star, but for indians, "vah ji vah, kya golfer hai, india ka naam roshan kardi ah."
