i like traditional because I understand the lyrics and respect the root of bhangra, bu t if i had to choose i would say it is more fun to watch Music teams, because they can get creative with their mixes and bring more energy in

a good example would be SGPD

you can still do traditional moves, with traditional mirza and jhommer but just to music pre-recorded

I don't understand the lyrics or boliyan and usually have to ask a team member to translate for this gujarati, but I would have to say bhangra is meant to be done on live dhol with live singing.

When live bhangra is executed perfectly, nothing can come to that.

Live is sick, don't get me wrong, but music is definitely more entertaining. I feel like if there was an all live competition versus a modern music based competition, more people would show up for the music competition. Live is only really appreciated by people like us, who understand the background behind bhangra and see the beauty of it as an art form. Most people who show up to competitions want to be entertained. Live probably has an entertainment factor of around 5 whereas modern is more like a 10 due to the creativity of modern teams' formations, moves, and even mixes.

The only thing more boring than watching live music at bhangra competitions is watching bass fishing on ESPN... Yes even golf is more entertaining...  CD music everytime!
So long BTF, it has been my pleasure... Post 999 will be my last...

I like both, but am definitely leaning towards live. Traditional steps to music is good, but it just doesnt capture the same feeling as all live. Id much rather watch a traditional competition in India than a modern one  here.

bingo Manjot i fell like doing bhangra is different on live then music
but i just have a different opinion on this abhi i fell like there is more energy when it is live on dhol then music
Music is way more creative and entertaining mostly for other cultures they just love the beats lol
but watching Live teams it seems to me that its the same thing over and over again aren't too many different boliyan that teams sing
or even the formations but now it seems like the teams are getting more traditionally modern i am expecting something crazy this coming up season
also its different watching videos and seeing it live i remember watching when Raju was singing at Boston Bhangra it was fun and entertaining.

Music teams are definitely fun and entertaining to watch because of the flexibility theyhave with the mix.  But live teams can also be entertaining, as long as its done right...right amount of energy, grace, proper execution.

I don't like when teams who usually dance to a CD, put in a live segment just to get "traditionality points".  Its usually not executed well, and the gap between when the live ends and music starts (or when music ends and live starts) also kills the flow.  It doesn't feel genuine or real...only a few teams could pull this off.

Yes most people will say that music is better compared to live, that is usually all from the person's point of view.  In general most people don't know about bhangra therefore music is more entertaining for them.

Live teams it seems to me that its the same thing over and over again aren't too many different boliyan that teams sing
or even the formations

Yes this is true, but the thing with live bhangra is execution.  I believe most people that love live bhangra love it because when you watch a team, you can almost tell what going to come next and just seeing it being performed at a high level is entertaining.  Seeing the steps and aspects of bhangra being performed to live dhol is just something you can't recreate with music.

As some people have already said, there is just a different feel to live.

i think you'll find a variation with some teams in how they do live.
For example, look at United Bhangra...they pick popular bhangra hits (current) and do them live. Their Bash set which was dominated by the United Bhangra Band and the dancers...

Totally original and I loved every minute of it. It's really up to the team and what they do. I wouldn't mind seeing more teams do what they do. Like, pick popular songs, and do them traditionally. That's possible.

Atleast in the competition setting, the fact that you have live music should not add to your team. However, the fact that you dance to traditional boliyan or dhol should. This means that it shouldn't matter if you are dancing to live music or recorded music.

Of course, dancing to popular recorded songs is more entertaining and gets the crowd more into it. But, adding some live is always appealing as well. The only problem with going all live is that you only appeal to those who really pay attention to traditional bhangra.

I'm not sure how many teams do "live performances" because they actually love it and they see no other way of doing bhangra... But I'd have to say that only 1-2 teams have been "traditional" from the get go, the rest are all fake-me-out live teams that do it to win.  They might be good, but they only chose that style because it was the 'IN" thing last year and most competitions were placing live teams... Where are all the live teams this year?  I sure as hell havent seen many...  Thank god that fad is over...

yeah raj! that's right. Their sarangi player is sick! I saw them last year at bash...which they also won 1st...and that's when i became a united fan.

like i said...teams can do different things, it's just up to the teams to do it.

about United Bhangra, i was on the after part buss with them in SoCal and they all were singing bolia and it was sick, the whole team knew the lyrics to the songs and the dhol player knew all the beats. I was basically shouting out random NEW songs and they knew all of them...so props to the whole team for know all the lyrics and having good voices.

as far as the topic goes, i am still say watching bhangra done on music is more entertaining and because its more entertaining i would rather watch a team on music.  At the same time i understand and appricate traditional bhangra to. There are some traditional performances on YouTube done by Indian teams that give me a boner!

As it was said before, when you can recognize the songs  and popular songs are used when people go live, that's amazing and extremely entertaining.

I'd love to see a MODERN team go live. And have their special effects all live as well! Like instead of a thunder sound effect, some dude is holding aluminum foil and shaking it. And instead of a sword sound effect, some dude is actually hitting a sword. Would be awesome.

live DONE RIGHT is amazing, but any live team that is not up to a certain standard becomes absolutely brutal
