Independent Team in Rural Areas (ie. UPSTATE NY)
« on: July 29, 2010, 10:10:24 AM »
Hey All

1st:  I will be unfortunately graduating soon--but this has been on my mind and could serve as some food for thought for others
2nd:  This is mostly food for thought for the upstate region (ie. Cornell, Rochester, Geneseo, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, Union, Oneonta, Cortland, New Paltz, etc)

We are all aware of the emergence and movement of independent teams recently but the majority of these teams tend to be in urban-city areas such as NY, NJ, Boston, DC, etc. However, there are some areas (ie. Upstate NY), where there are many collegiate teams within a certain distance of one another.

As we all know, there are many great teams such as Cornell Bhangra, Rochester Bhangra, Geneseo Bhangra, and more. As well as some teams that exist but have not yet gotten a chance to shine yet (due to lack funds, lack of interest in bhangra at the educational institution, etc) or that have died down recently. Some examples would include Union Bhangra, Orange Bhangra, Buffalo, Albany etc. some of which really do/did have potential

With that said, what are the thoughts/opinions/concerns associated along with the idea of an independent competitive team in an area like that

It is obvious that the KEY drawback/hinderance would be distance, while there are some schools extremely close to one another ie. areas like Cornell, Binghamton, & Syracuse are within 45 minute drives from one another while others, are extremely far ie. Binghamton and Buffalo are about 3.5 hours from one another (Don't mind my constant reference to Binghamton as I am somewhat biased and only know how far others are from there)

However after seeing instances in the past year of the bhangra season with cases where teams are having dancers, dholis, chimtas from completely different areas - (you know who you are  ;D  and I applaud that as it takes a whole lot of time, effort, and not to mention money on the individuals behalf as well as the teams to make it successful and efficient)

It is definitely worth giving a thought in my opinion, Anywhoo, enough banter  :-X , let me know what anyone/you all think hopefully I'm not the first to have wondered about it

bro i think a lot is also gonna depend on where graduated alums are going too...if people get into places outta NY it might be hard.

as for collegic students dancing on 2 teams i know a lot of people do itt and it can be done but honestly i cant even imagine how much time and effort that would take....

butt good luck mann im sure u'll find a ton of people in upstate ny who have loved bhangra but were never on a team

lol ahmad thanks man,

I didn't think about the alumni factor and thats def a good point,

This is actually not something I'll have the time to try out, but just some food for thought for others who may have wondered the same thing

Primarily I thought of it after reading many of the recent posts/topics about the "evolutions" and "movements" in bhangra that are constantly changing - I'm amazed at the extent to which how "independent", independent teams have really become & how different virtual technologies are being used more to further expand the reach independent teams are taking, with members not only in different parts of their citys or state, but different parts of the country...and Sid just mentioned an example of PDAP & GOB - theres tons of teams like that
