How was it adapting to bhangra?

Interesting, hard, and fun

Took me some time to get the hang of it and getting the feel for bhangra.  A lot of hours and hours of practicing and working hard.

Prob one of the hardest things is just getting the feel for bhangra, like the so called nakhra seems some what different.  Like both are the same in simple aspects has having fun and similing but different in other ways, i dont really know how to explain it.

And the overall hardest part is developing style.

I've always been a fan of latino dances especially Salsa, Merengue & Bachata, they're a lot of fun and require a lot of coordination with your partner. I've done a few hip hop routines at college and I want to get back in to that (thanks to America's Best Dance Crew).

I once did a garba routine but I had the hardest time getting the rhythm and I would keep "bhangrafying" all the moves (as per the person teaching it  >:(). Havish, maybe you can show me the basics one of these days.

I did garba/raas for high school one year, it was super fun.  If my school had a raas team I would try out one year.  It's so flowy and graceful but still has crazy energy like bhangra.  Workin with the dandiya is fun, too.  Only prob is I think the music isn't as good   ;)

i didn't relize this became a new thread...hmmm...lol. Anyways...i did hip-hop for about 3 years....salsa for bit...other cultural dances such as lion dancing have always been an intrest to me...so i did those back in high school for about 2 years. A lot of hard work to get everything down...esp in lion dancing...the combos with your partner...insaneee...=] you guys should watch some Lion Dancing Videos.

I did Kuchipudi Indian Classical dance for 10 years....

Quite different than bhangra....but I must say, it helped me to develop more stamina/endurance and you have to have some crazy expressions with classical, and getting used to practicing a lot etc.

I took salsa classes, maaad fun.

I love all kinds of dancing.

Nav, I just split this into a seperate topic (as per Havish's suggestion).

It's interesting to see everyone's background in dance. The thing that stands out is despite the lack of formal bhangra training within the bhangra community (in the US especially) there are so many talented dancers who have picked up bhangra just from each other and watching videos & teaching themselves.

Ya sure thing Waleed, Next time we met up remind me and ill show you some steps.

there are so many talented dancers who have picked up bhangra just from each other and watching videos & teaching themselves.

Thats how all of the dancers I know have developed.  You start off just a basic dancing abilities and work them into bhangra talent. Just got to have a good coach to teach you.

Garba and Raas!!!!!!!

Gujjus represent! (I'm assuming you're gujju, correct me if I'm wrong)

I'm actually on my school's competitive raas team too. Gotta keep up being gujju and shit.  ;D

And by other dance styles, if you mean a) taken a class and b) having done a performance, I have done not only bhangra, garba and raas, but also jazz, hiphop, tap, ballet, bollywood (if you consider that a genre) and modern (eeek). Honestly, I don't think I would be as baller in Bhangra as I am right now if I hadn't done all of those. For example, having done raas for my entire life has given me energy and ballet for 4 years has given me grace. And having done modern just gives me the chills. Eek.

Bboying, Locking, Popping, Boogaloo, House all my life and then I picked up Bhangra during college.  Hahaha one time at a Bhangra afterparty, I started to incorporate tutting moves while doing bhangra during a cypher.  I must say that bhangra is good for developing stamina and energy.
