Costume Tips & Tricks
« on: July 12, 2008, 12:59:15 PM »
I'm sure we've all had our fair share of paggs getting loose, chunnis falling off, salwar catching on our feet, missing buttons, who knows what other costume malfunctions.  Any tips, tricks, pointers for getting ready to perform?

1)  What to do w/ a salwar that is way too long for the girl?
2)  What to do w/ a chaddar that is too short?  [We sewed 4 inches of cotton on top of our boys']
3)  Tips to keep paggs secure?
4)  Tips for very heavy chunnis?
5)  How to keep jewelry, especially tikkas, in place?
6)  How to keep a fake gutt/braid secure and in place?
7)  Anything else!

Tie the patti tight.  It should cover the area at the base of the turla in the front and should be tied low on the pagg in the back.

For this recent little khel mel thing we still used the starched-end type where you make the turla out of the same piece of fabric as the rest... Karanvir from PDDS/MSU tied 'em for us he's like a pro lol but one was still loose it still falling off... any way to secure them after they tied??

Also I'm sorry but some of the pagg terminology you guys using I don't understand so if someone could define these terms I would really appreciate it.  I know "pagg" and "turla" that's it

Also turla in front/directly above forehead, or turla on the side... Which do you prefer and why?  Is it purely dependent upon aesthetic tastes or is there reasoning behind the different styles?

I have noticed that usually SIDE TURLA is for MUSICIANS (dholi, singers, chimta and algozey player), while all the DANCERS have front turla. Some teams make a little "ear flower" or mini turla above the ear as well - others leave it hanging like a flap.

Here's an exception, SGPD at a wedding (all dancers have side turlas here)

And an example that follows the rule: Rutgers Bhangra musicians w/side turlas

I would agree with Arjun and say the best way to keep a Pagg tight is the patti (strip of cloth you tie over the pagg)
A pagg should be tight for a dancer to feel comfortable. If you have a headache...then that just means its tight enough

The patti is the piece of fabric that is tied around the pagg, primarily to secure the turla in place, but also for decorative purposes.  It is about 2 inches wide.

Here's a picture of Ricky Dhariwal tying one.  He's also wearing one himself.

theres nothing more annoying than seeing a guy whose kaintha comes loose during, if the little ball that tightens the kaintha doesnt give enough security, tie the back tail in a knot so it doesnt become loose! For chadrey, if its too short, you gotta tie it lower on the waist. thats all you can really do. ALso, its also a pet peeve of to see bare legs on stage. PLEASE PIN YOUR CHADRA! For phuman, please tie em tight enough and secure them so we dont see them flying around on stage when you're doing a double chaffa or something, HELLLLA annoying. Please wear your vardiyan like you are going to perform. Please dont look like you just rolled out of bed in them! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ps. I still Love everyone :)

For pughs, if the majority of your team does not wear a pugh on a regular basis/rarely wears one, I think it would be a good idea for them to practice with pughs every once in a while. I have seen so many guys who only wear a pugh on the day of the competition fidgeting with their pugh before they get on stage to the point where they are pushing the turla out of their pugh and ruining the larhs.

And make sure you make it clear to everyone that once your pugh is tied, you do not touch it. If it hurts because its tied too tight, suck it up, lol. For a turlay vali pugh, it is going to be tied pretty tight, because you dont want it to get loose when you are dancing.

I know for most of the guys who tie pughs on daily basis anyway, it is never a problem...I have never seen a sardar's pugh come off on stage. So I think not being used to wearing one is one of the main reasons they come off so often for teams as people are always loosening it up before they get on stage by pushing on the sides or sticking their fingers on the sides or the middle. And Arjun's suggestion is right on, the patti will make a big difference in the tightening of the pugh.

The way most traditional teams do it is turla in the front for dancers, and side for band. I think the reason SGPD did it side in that wedding vid. is b/c they are just easier to tie on the side, and they might have just decided it was easier to do side turlay for a non competition, b/c I know we did that a couple times too.

As far as chadray, I think a lot of people get nervous when their chadra is a little low because they think they will trip over it or something, so they tie it real high. The bottom of your chadra should be just about touching the ground and also tied very tight. And if they are just genuinely too short, maybe just invest in some new ones, b/c chadras alone don't cost you very much. Just make sure you check out the material before you buy it because some are just too stiff (thats what she said).

Lol yeah, I feel you Meistro. A lot of teams don't take good care of their outfits leading up the performance so they are ruined before they even get on stage. Its a good idea to fold your chadray nicely, untie your pughs and fold them up nicely, hang your kurta and vest up on a hanger and iron them before you get to the show. It will make your outfits last longer & will make your overall presentation a lottt better.

Basically, everything you tie should be tight. Pugh, chadra, phuman, kaintha. It might be uncomfortable for the moment, but it will make the performance that much better.

make sure the pughs you use are VOIL fabric, it's the lightest so when you starch the turla, it starches nicely and when you tie the pugh tight, you don't feel like you have a tokra on your head.

alot of teams starch paghs too much so it gets difficult to tuck the turla in too much... avoid over starching.

And yea front turlas traditional for dancers, side for musicians but side is alooooottt easier to tie so alot of teams just use those for non-competition gigs.

What is "voil" fabric?  But great advice I think we should make boys practice w/ paggs before the comp, I feel silly for not thinking of that before.  Also it's good to hear that they should be tight and if it hurts just suck it up.  Now I know it's okay to tell our boys that, lol.

Thanks so much, I love BTF

Any advice from and/or for girls?

Oh also, what do you wear underneath the pugg?  Do you tie a bandana or something over your hair before you begin tying the pagg?

you can wear a bandana, some guys do, some dont. I think its just personal preference..........for girls, basically the same thing as guys. Dont look clumsy, I think the most important thing is to make sure the chunni is looking nice and make sure your bangs are clipped down and not jumpin around with the music (mariam lol). Girls have it easy actually because everything is ready made, they dont have to tie anything. Emphasis on hair and chunni though. Make that parandhi look sexayyyyyyyyyyyy

well, if all the costumes are one color then i would suggest switching the salwar's around so that the shortest one goes for the shortist girl, otherwise u are just gonna have to tie it higher. Also, we pin the bottom of our salwards so that they dont come under our feet and cause us to slip and fall and look like idiots :P

Definitely definitely pin up ur chunni with unncesessary amounts of safety pins so that it doesnt go flying around everywhere. bad personal experience with getting tangled up with people  during a performancewhen its too loose. Also, depending on the style you set up for ur chunni, it should be easy to be able to hide the fact that the salwar may be tied up higher if the salwar is too long for any of the girls.

we didnt do parandhi's this past year because none of our girls knew how to braid them in and we tried the whole fake hair thing for girls with short hair and it just didnt work out so great... lol but with the tikka we use eyelash glue to hold it down to the forehead and just make sure to secure the earrings and the necklaces well so that they dont become loose or fall down during the performance.

hope this helps :)
