question: how do you all wash your outfits? we handwash cause we dont know what the machine will do to them...

I don't think we've ever washed or cleaned our outfits (apart from paggan) for any team I've been on.
Really....wouldnt it have a slight odor to it?

well since we have silk, I put it in with washer on gentle cycle.
even with my normal shalwar kamiz(all types of material, with light work done on it), i just put them in washer...no damage done.

ahhh yes the odor...a mix between the smell that comes along with indian gooods and just straight up nasty swamp status..

its disgusting...what would lazy all guys teams do without a little febreeze?

Advantage to co-ed: Have the girls wash them.. (blatantly sexist statement and a joke)

you have to wash the puggan for sure...especially when you first get them.

I think i've tried febreeze..and, doesn't really work too well. When some people on our team sweat like crazy (you know who you are  8)) i go ahead and wash the paggan like every wear for him..give him a fresh one everytime. For the outfits...i went ahead and dryclean at the end of the season. It costs quite a bit...but it does a good job and feels great after getting them cleaned.   ;)

We usually hand wash ours just to be safe.  Everyone on the team does their own.  It's a total pain in the ass and I try to talk my mom into doing it for me.  We don't wash it as often.  During our last season we washed em about twice and then never during the offseason (wearing them to receptions and stuff were rough because of that stank)

As for febreeze, I personally hate that smell, and find it kinda gross smelling.  I think if you're not gonna wash your outfits and you begin to notice an overwhelming smell, it's probably just best to hang them outside or something.  Let that sucker air out.  That's what I do with my hockey stuff: don't bother washing, just hang outside and let mother nature do her business.

So in short, I either get MY MOTHER to hand wash it, or MOTHER NATURE to air it out.  Don't you just love mothers?

If you have vests you should keep the chuni in the back. So bobby pin the top as you would normally, then take the corners, put them together and pin them in the back between the shoulders. Then pin down the chuni around the shoulder blades, sides of the lower back, and then a bunch at the bottom to keep it from flying.

Tips for Ladies:

1.) Parandiyaan: You can make a fake parandi by braiding a paranda and then sewing it to a thick black fabric head band that goes all the way around your head.  If you have short hair pin it/ braid it/tie back whatever hair you do have and then put on the headband.  Bobby pin the head band to your head, arrange the paranda in whatever look you want and safety pin it to your costume.  Put on your chunni and you're good to go :)

We've used this trick in our gidhas for the women who have really short hair and no one can tell!

2.) Get the straight bobby pins from India.  These pins are longer, tighter and don't have the edge of one side curled up like bobby pins you get here.  They're much stronger.  They're great for keeping back thick hair, pinning heavy chunnis and even for the fake parandi I just mentioned :)

3.) Think about getting half-sole lyrical sandals.  They save some damage to the balls of your feet and they help smooth out your dancing regardless of what the stage is like.  And no one can see that you're wearing them!  Here's what they look like: http://www.dance4less.com/HSLS_gym_shoes.htm

4.) Regarding makeup: You're not going to be photographed up close or recorded in HD.  When you're performing on stage, your makeup needs to be exaggerated.  Wear foundation, wear blush that is deeper in color so your cheekbones standout, wear dark lipstick and wear your eyeliner thicker.  Just make sure the colors GO with the colors of your costumes. You don't have to look like kathakali dancers, but you need the people in the back of the hall to be able to see you.

5.) Find a good sports bra.  HOWEVER, wear a regular bra under your sports bra.  You still want some curves - uniboobs are not that cute and may make your shirt fit weird.

2nd Dheerja on pinning chunnis like that if you have vests for the girls. :)

And 2nd whichever guy talked about pinning jewelry.

General costume tips/tricks for teams:

1.) Put together a kit to take with you when you go to perform.  Make sure that kit has black thread, white thread, thread that matches your costumes and paggs, needles, tons of bobby pins, safety pins of all sizes, black rubber bands, plain rubber bands, first-aid kit stuff like bandaids of different sizes, neosporin, alcohol pads, etc., and extra strength hairspray.

2.) Everyone on the team should learn how to do a simple hem.  Sometimes your kurta/sleeves/chadrey/whatever get in your way and you can do a simple hem for the performance that won't ruin the costume and you can take out after.

3.) I don't know if anyone mentioned this because I didn't have the patience to read through all 5 pages but if you buy a box of pantiliners, you can stick them to the armpit of your shirt and help avoid pitstains.  Because a.) pitstains look gross when you're performing and b.) you don't want to ruin the costume.

4.) Have more than 1 person on your team that can a.) tie a pug b.) tie a chadara c.) pin a chunni d.) braid hair - regardless of gender.  It will save you sooo much time!

5.) If you have the type of necklaces that have the cloth bead that pulls it tight, sometimes the bead can get loose.  Get a small safety pin (the smallest you can find) and just pin both sides of that chain together.  I wouldn't generally suggest pinning the necklace to your shirt because you may rip the costume or make your neck uncomfortable.

Hope this helps

great advice from post above me :)

I just wanted to stress real quick that it is VITAL to have on your team an expert pagg tier or 2! Omfg if you have 2 people that can tie paggs - holy shit you are goldenn as far as getting ready. no stress, just chillaxin, getting ready, not worried at all. for a co-ed team like ours it would be one person tieing 3 paggs and the other person tieing 3 paggs adn you're done with the hard part. im sure if you can tie a proper bhangra pagg you should know how to tie a chadhra haha it only takes like 2-3 mins to tie a chadhra

also for ladies if there is one girl or 2 girls that are very good at pinning chunnis/doing parandis...you're golden there as well :) :)

trainnn yourselves people trainnn...ive had to ask ppl for pagg tieing alll the time at comps and its soo much stress and pressure on me...im learning how to do it now so that when next year comes by i can relax and be mastered at tieing paggs and even if other teams need help, i could possibly help (since sooo many ppl have helped me out)

When pinning your chunnis girls, bend your head down to leave some "give" at the bottom so you don't rip your chunni doing some fancy headwork.

Another thing for short haired girls, investing in a hairpiece will help keep your chunni up and looks really nice as well.  I have a fake bun so I just pinned back my hair as much as possible when I had a bob (or jammed it into a small ponytail as the bob grew out) pinned the "bun" on top and jammed as many u-shaped "joora" pins as possible into it with the chunni on top.  It feels super secure even with people jumping on and off your shoulders and incorrectly using your bun for balance while dismounting stunts!  Don't attempt this while your hair is straightened, the bun will slide right out (on stage, its super embarassing).  Texture and/or product will help keep it in place.

The tikka can be held in place using eyelash or nail glue and holding it on top for 30 seconds.  Have fun taking that off though :P

we had an attached front turla for the longest time but switched over a little while ago...any tips on how to shape the turla at the end after tucking it in? The tops of the starch always tend to bend downward/forward after I tick it in
