Hi, So i know that some people have been talking about how pricey the official hotel is and i've been searching for cheaper hotels by the venue/official hotel/JFK at the requests of certain teams and (1.) the total difference for one room/double bed/one night is just about 20-30 bucks max (which for me isn't that much money, seeing that one room would probably be divided by 4 people, if not more) (2.)  These cheaper hotels do not have enough rooms to accommodate everyone (3.) It's much easier for committee members and liaisons to assist teams quickly and of course.... (4.) It's always just SOO much more fun when everyone is staying at the same hotel.

Need some help from anyone fimilar with NY and the venue -- people are saying that I should be able to take the chinatown bus and then the J train to the venue...is the area shady?

In the day time you'll be fine. There are so many cops stationed around that THEY make you feel unsafe ahhhh they're like cockroaches

The area is fine, reputed as shady to outsiders but I go to school in Harlem (pretty low rep) and I have the best time of my life there, nothing will happen. If you feel uncomfortable roaming around at night one of us can prolly pick u up n drop you off
Strangers will approach you and ask peculiar questions but you just have to admire that as one of NYC's many great qualities =)

where's your bus dropping you off? The J train has limited stops in the city...you may want to take the "E" train instead! Does the bus have a stop around Penn Station? (that's close to the E train)

Or if the bus drops you off near 42nd street Bus Terminal. It all depends where the bus is dropping you. Where are you coming from?
I am not sure about the hotels. I never saw a walking distance hotel from this venue. I will try to find out some.
