**Windows Vista Help!
« on: July 15, 2010, 06:23:12 PM »
Hey guys, im not sure what the problem is, but it only occurs on one of the two user accounts on this computer. Everytime i want to open up any program, it takes me to the "open with" page, meaning the only way to open almost every program on this user is to right click then click run as administrator. Can somebody help me with this?

Do you have any information in that profile that you need? It may be easier to just delete that account and create a new one... Individual user accounts have personal registry and ini settings, it's very possible something you did in that account such as installing a program may have corrupted these strings... It's always good to try an updated anti virus, you can go to download.com and download AVG Free... It's one of the ebst free AV's I've used... Other than that, I don't know what else to say, often times it's easier and faster to start fresh...

everytime i want to start of fresh, instead of reinstalling the operating system, i create a partition so that i can still access files from my other account.

You can use various utilities to create and change partitions... Lets say for example you have a 500 gig hard drive in your system... You can create a 100 gig partition for your main drive (C) and a 400 gig partition for your data drive (d, e,) ... This way, if you ever have trouble in the future, you just reformat the main partition... Once reformatted, all data on the second partition will remain intact given you didn't have a virus or spyware that compromised the data...

There is a utility when you boot from the windows cd to reinstall the OS...

Before you re-partition your hard drive and then attempt to transfer your important data/reinstall the OS, I suggest that you look at this:

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistaperformance/thread/e939ba45-c6ab-499d-ab21-433e7314d344

Read over that entire thread. I would try out the suggested answer/fix by Emkay1001. Report back if that doesn't solve things.

Easiest way to partition your disk (to back up ur data) is to right click my computer and click manage.

Then from there click disk management. Right click on your main drive in the bottom part of the window and click shrink volume.

Enter the amount of space you want (or the max it'll let you), and click shrink.

Then go ahead and right click your newly created partition and do "new volume" and name it whatever. Transfer all ur dataz onto it and then delete the user account.

This doesn't result in as fast of a recovery because the data is scattered all over your hard drive so a completely fresh install of the entire drive with your data backed up on another drive (maybe a flash drive) would be most optimal. I highly suggest short stroking your hard drive if it's bigger than 750 gigs. You will not only see a huge speed boost (cuz your transfer rates stay more consistent) but your data will never be lost from any sort of tragedy (not including fire, virus, robbery, downloading of Bagga safri videos)

Ask me for more detail if you want more info.

i dont think this is a case of a virus problem...its probably just system preferences. Vista is just retarded so you have to manually set the settings for running programs as a administrator or not, asking permission for every damn thing you do, and the settings for what programs you want to use for certain extensions and etc....

simple solution:

Get Windows 7 hahaha

Windows 7 is the same bro. The permission thing is just UAC which takes seconds to disable in both vista and 7. I lot of people have a hard time believeing that 7 is just vista with a few tweaks. Of course it is better but Vista gets a bad rep all the time and I don't understand why.

I've actually had more problem with 7 when it comes to running things as "administrator" ON AN ADMIN account at that but Vista is just more free IMO.

This method is mainly just to create a backup partition so it's no absolutely necessary to do it. But to follow up, what DOES it show?

If you can find a way to back up ur stuff some other way, then you can just go ahead and make a new account and restore all your files.
